Located in southern France, in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, Domaine Usseglio Raymond & Fils has been a family winery for three generations. Wine production was started żeby Francis Usseglio, an Italian who moved to these lands to start his wine production in the 1930s. In 1963, the company was taken over żeby Raymond Usseglio and his wife Danielle and the winery finally adopted its own label. Since 1999, the company has been managed by Stephane, Raymond's son. The company vineyards extend over 24 hectares and produce white and red wines from biodynamic agriculture. Lirac Charles I is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, sourced both from the company's vineyards and purchased from different terroirs, to achieve the desired balance. This wine has a bright ruby color and a fresh and lively aromatic profile with notes of raspberries, currants, black cherries, licorice, and hints of spices. On the palate, it is fruity and full-bodied, with firm but well-integrated tannins and a long finish that recalls a mineral vein. Try it with game birds or grilled red meat. It is ready to drink but can also evolve considerably with a few years in the cellar.
