Cellar for up to 15 years. Decant for an hour or more before serving. The Conceito winery’s Douro red is a bold, ripe wine, bursting with aromas of blackberry, cherry, plum skin and cocoa. It is sourced from old vineyards around the Douro Valley, and in classic Portuguese style, the exact composition of grapes may be a mystery, even to the wine-maker. Rita Ferreira Marques is the heart and mind of Conceito, an oenologist with experience in some of the world’s greatest terroirs, from Bordeaux to California, to New Zealand. In the special terroir of the Douro Valley, Conceito owns 86 hectares of vineyards, spread across 5 farms. All of them are farmed without the use of herbicides or pesticides, in the spirit of minimal intervention in wine-making. Conceito’s Tinto has been released every year since 2005, serving as the winery’s most complete expression of the Douro region. It is soft and sumptuous in the mouth, balanced with a fresh acidity. Look for flavours of ripe berries, figs, cigar smoke, spice and herbal hints of cola. With its maximalist yet elegant character, it is a fantastic bottle to start exploring Portuguese wine with. Enjoy it with high-quality cuts of meat, roast chicken, or beef stew.
